Jaeger-LeCoultre's Master Grande Tradition Calibre 945
In an age
of maximizing potential, technology is usually considered the most efficient
means of achieving a product or system’s maximum potential. In the Vallée de
Joux, the solution is usually mechanical and often a seeming violation of the accepted
laws of physics. Featuring Jaeger-LeCoultre’s patented ‘crystal gongs’, the sound
of the Calibre 945’s chime is amplified by soldering the gongs directly to the
crystal, using it as a sounding board. In addition to this innovation, introduced
by the Maison in 2005, the Calibre 945 also features articulated trebuchet
hammers which strike square-profile gongs, whose reverberations are regulated by
a patented ‘silent strike governor’, utilizing centrifugal forces to silence
background noise.
On the
watch’s dial, the Orbital Flying Tourbillon makes one complete, anti-clockwise rotation
in one sidereal day – 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4.1 seconds, for those not
familiar with sidereal time. Within the concentric design of the multi-level dial
is a star chart which depicts the Northern Hemisphere as seen from the 46th
parallel, the latitude of the Vallée de Joux, suspended over a mechanical looking
dome which appears to support it. The Calibre 945 will be available in pink
gold (limited to 8 pieces) and white gold (limited to 8 pieces).
